The three star Canoeist will be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered water.


10497027_1444474622493011_7791397271835574420_oThe 3 star Open is normally done as a two Day Training and assessment, The first day we look at your open boat strokes and skills on the open water as well as coving improvised sailing and the basics of poling before taking our new and polished skills on to moving water for day two where we will not only look at moving water paddling skills but also Lining, poling and putting them in context of the journey with open boating,


sailCourse Pre-requisites

• Provide evidence of at least 3 different open canoe journeys, of about 3 hours duration (10Km) each; at least 1 of these needs to be in an open water environment, and 1 on a river trip
• A consistent BCU 2 Star standard of performance in an open canoe is required for anyone starting to work towards the BCU 3 Star Open Canoe Award;
• The ability to swim confidently in the open water and river environment, wearing normal paddling clothes


What you need

BCU speak “Personal equipment appropriate for the candidate as a competent member of the assessment group”

  • In short your normal paddling kit, suitable for open water and grade 1/2 water environments ,
  • Buoyancy Aid, Helmet Cag & wetsuit ect.
  • water proofs
  • Packed lunch
  • Hot & cold drinks for the day
  • Snacks
“if” you have any of the following then please bring with you, ( Don’t feel you need rush out and buy anything)
  • First aid Kit
  • Safety equipment, eg. Throw bags, Tapes
  • Tarp
  • Spare clothes, depending of time of year don’t be afraid to bring a warm jacket to stick on during lunch or if weather turns

Any and all of the above items should be dry bagged where needed and then put in a ballast bag or old rucksack or blue barrel this gives you the ability to have a moveable ballast within your boat
