Award Description This award is designed to progress your judgment, decision making and expertise providing an understanding of journeying. As a canoeist you should be confident in planning and undertaking canoe journeys, anywhere from estuaries and coastlines to white water rivers. This confidence should be based upon both proficiency in skills and a broad appreciation of surroundings and environmental context.

Your Progressive Canoe Award endorses your ability to apply appropriate decision making skills for a safe day out canoeing on grade 2(3) rivers and large areas of open water. On open inland water, you might be up to 500m from shore and in winds up to and including force 4. If travelling on the sea, you would be using sheltered areas, small bays and harbours with the minimal possibility of being blown offshore. When on the sea, you will be happy operating in force 3 winds (force 2 if the wind direction is offshore). This award should be seen as a sound basis for independently building the experience and expertise associated with Advanced Canoe Award holders.

During your Award we will be looking at

Planning & Preparation Prevents poor performance, 
Personal Paddling Skills
, Developing your flat water strokes to develop efficiency and more them into the WW environment,  looking at making it smooth and effortless for you as you move around the river
River running tactics for you and group:
Rescue Skills,  Personal & group
Safety, Leadership & Group Skills, looking at what makes a safe team and how you can be an integral part of the whole process to make your decent down the river Fun and safe
Self reflexion and development, Helping to make every day a learning day as well as coach feedback & development plan

 

Course Pre-requisites

• None, You can direct acess any of the personal performance awards as a guide however see below

• A consistent BC 3 Star or BC Canoe Award  standard of performance in the appropriate craft is required for anyone starting to work towards the Progressive Canoe Award;

• The ability to swim confidently in moving water, wearing normal paddling clothes

What you need

  • In short your normal paddling kit, suitable for grade 3-4 paddling,
  • Buoyancy Aid, Helmet Cag & wetsuit ect.
  • Any Safety equipment, eg. Throw bags, Tapes, crabs First Aid kit
    Please don’t purchase anything kit wise for the course, unless  its essential or your just feeling the urge for shinny new kit

North Wales Area; Depending on water/Wind Levels on the day, I like to try and do something different where possabile
